When you are putting on a new roof, one of the biggest choices is what to cover it with. In Ireland, the two most popular options are natural slate and concrete tile. Both do the job well — the right choice comes down to looks, budget, and the style of your home.
Natural slate
Slate is the classic, premium choice. It looks superb, especially on period and traditional homes, and it lasts an exceptionally long time — often generations. It is heavier and more expensive, both in materials and in the skilled labour needed to lay it properly, but the finish and longevity are hard to match.
Concrete tile
Concrete tiles are the workhorse of modern Irish roofing. They come in a wide range of styles and colours, including versions that mimic the look of slate, and they are more affordable than natural slate. They are robust, well proven in our climate, and quicker to install, which keeps the overall cost down.
How they cope with our weather
Both materials handle Irish rain and wind well when they are installed correctly with proper underlay and fixings. The real enemy of any roof here is poor workmanship, not the material itself. A well-laid concrete tile roof will comfortably outlast a badly-laid slate one.
