Flat roofs are common on extensions, garages, dormers, and porches. If yours needs replacing, you have three main systems to choose from: felt, EPDM rubber, and fibreglass. Each has its place. Here is how they compare in plain terms.
Felt
Traditional felt roofing has come a long way, and modern torch-on felt is far more durable than the older versions. It is the most budget-friendly option and, when installed properly in layers, gives reliable service. It typically has the shortest lifespan of the three, so it suits smaller projects or where budget is the main priority.
EPDM rubber
EPDM is a single sheet of rubber membrane, often laid in one piece so there are very few joins for water to find. It is our go-to recommendation for most flat roofs: it is fully waterproof, low maintenance, copes well with our weather, and commonly lasts a couple of decades or more. For the balance of cost and longevity, it is hard to beat.
Fibreglass (GRP)
Fibreglass gives a hard, seamless, durable finish that looks smart and stands up well to foot traffic — handy for a balcony or a roof that gets walked on. It needs dry conditions and skilled installation to cure properly, which makes it a more involved job, but the result is tough and long-lasting.
Which should you choose?
- Tight budget or a small garage roof — felt is worth considering.
- Best all-round value and lifespan — EPDM rubber is usually the winner.
- A surface that gets walked on or where you want a hard finish — fibreglass.
